Mercedes may manufacture engines , gear boxes in India

German auto giant Mercedes-Benz is contemplating a possibility to set up a plant to manufacture engines, gear boxes and other components in India at a whopping investment of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 crore. While the company is yet to finalise the plans, the lower cost of manufacturing in India has made the company give a serious thought to it.

Mercedes-Benz bus business head Harald Landman said this after launching company's intercity luxury bus in Pune. Assembled at Sutlej Motors in Jalandhar, the Rs 80 lakh bus will compete with its swiss-counterpart Volvo in the fast growing Indian luxury bus segment.

Speaking to reporters after the launch, Landman said, "We are yet to figure out, when the entire bus building operation, including development of engine and gear boxes, will happen in India. However, we are looking at a possibility to set up a manufacturing unit over next three to five years." While Landman did not disclose the location to set up this unit, officials close to the development hinted at Pune.

"As Mercedes is setting up its new facility at Chakan near Pune, the manufacturing plant has to come up in the same region. Since Pune has a strong automobile component industry, the unit has to come up in this region," an official stated. Once the company darws a concrete plan for this Rs 2,500 crore project, then it will approach government of Maharashtra for approvals. "We might explore other states to set up this manufacturing unit, provided, things do not work out in Maharashtra," he added.

Elaborating the business plan for the newly launched bus, Landman said, "Mercedes-Benz enjoys a 17 per cent market share in global luxury bus market. We have built the new bus on our versatile O500 R/RF chassis being developed at Pune plant. While most of the components are being imported Brazil unit, the body building will happen in Jalandhar through an agreement with Sutlej Motors."

When asked about Indian luxury bus market, Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director Dr Wilfried Aulbur said, "The luxury bus market is growing in India. Volvo, so far the only significant player in India has sold some 350 buses last year. Our plan is to earn a significant market share within the first year."

You've probably heard of it, a television lad's magazine fronted by Jeremy Clarkson talking testosterone fuelled nonsense about cars. If you are unfortunate enough to watch it you'll think the motor industry only consists of top marques, and as an aside some rather pedestrian econo-boxes for the poor.

Well the numbers for August are out, and car sales are at their lowest since 1966 (the year we won the World Cup) but the real meat and potatoes is in the actual numbers of cars sold within these shores of some 60 million people, many of whom are extremely affluent.

Aston Martin, sold a whopping 19 cars... Jaguar and Land Rover a measly 422 cars each...

The good news doesn't end there, the stock markets are tumbling again, and this graph from the two biggest UK house mortgage companies tells its own story.

While many people have complained / observed that if the media consistently talk up a recession, then sooner or later it is going to happen, it is a very long stretch from admitting that the media has an influence, to admitting that what we are seeing here are actually signs of a shift in the economy.

Two Workshop Owners Charged With Submitting False Claims

Two workshop owners pleaded not guilty in separate sessions courts here today to submitting false claims regarding the supply of gear boxes for Proton Perdana V6 Executive cars belonging to the Terengganu government.

The accused were Tor Kok Siong, 52, who runs a workshop in Bukit Kecil and Choong Yuen Sang, 48, of Chendering.

Tor who was represented by lawyer Osman Bakar, was alleged to have submitted four claims between Nov 2006 and June this year regarding the supply of gear boxes worth RM18,057.68 each for the cars bearing plate numbers TAG 8778, TAG 7979, TT 3 and TT 7 at the Terengganu State Secretary Office when no such items had been supplied.

The father of two was charged under Section 11(c) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 and if convicted, he would be liable to imprisonment of between 14 days and 20 years and fine of not less than five times the sum.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sophian Zakaria from the Anti-Corruption

Agency asked the court to impose a RM20,000 bail on Tor on each count on the ground that the accused had deceived the state government.

Osman, however, objected to Sophian's recommendation, saying that the court should not impose such an amount to penalise his client but ensure that justice would prevail.

In his case, he said, Tor would not run away because he had been staying in Terengganu for a long time and had a business and family here.

Judge M. Bakri Abd Majid allowed Tor bail of RM5,000 on each count and fixed Dec 23 and 24 for trial.

In another court, Choong was charged with committing a similar offence on Aug 2 last year at the same place for supply of a gear box worth RM19,119.91 for the car with registration number TAK 415.

He was represented by lawyer Siti Saleha Mohd Tahir while the prosecution was conducted by Sophian.

Judge Mohammad Khalid Abd Karim allowed Choong bail of RM7,000 and fixed Dec 14 for trial.

Bonfiglioli Transmission’s industrial gearboxes used for the refurbishment of Sydney Harbour Bridge

Synchronised sets of Bonfiglioli Transmission industrial gearboxes are being used on Sydney’s Harbour Bridge to drive two 60-tonne workmen’s gantries. The compact and versatile A series bevel helical gearboxes, basically used in manufacturing, mining, materials handling and primary processing applications, are used in sets of eight on each mobile platform to drive them along rails beneath the length of the 503m long main arch of the bridge.

The compact drives feature stainless steel brake components that have been fitted to the brake motors to ensure reliability of operation in marine environments. The drives are designed to ensure longevity of service on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge with its top portion standing 134 metres above the harbour and has a total length of 2.3kms. This bridge carries eight road traffic lanes and two rail lines.

Gear up for better ride

It's slightly slower and slightly more thirsty - but Mazda says the revised RX-8 sports car is also a lot better to drive.

Power from the rotary remains unchanged in the manual model (170kW) - a decision based on "spiralling petrol prices", says the Japanese company. The automatic version leaps 17kW to 158kW.

Low to mid-range engine response has been improved for both versions which share the same torque figure of 211Nm at 5500rpm.

The six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes are new, derived from those of the smaller MX-5 roadster. Internal changes were made so the transmissions would work with the high-revving (up to 9000rpm) characteristics of the RX-8's "Renesis" rotary engine.

The revised gearing means although the new RX-8 is intended to be more driveable, it's also 0.2 of a second slower to 100km/h.

And just a little bit more thirsty, with the ADR economy figure up 0.3 litres to 12.9 litres per 100km.

The RX-8 is priced at $55,395.

Shanthi Gears in top gear on takeover buzz

Gears surged 12.46% to Rs 75.90 at 10:45 IST on BSE on reports Suzlon Energy, through its Belgium-based unit, is planning to buy a substantial stake in the company.
Shares of Suzlon Energy were down 1.72% at Rs 237.75.

Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex was down 100.20 points, or 0.66%, at 15017.19.

On BSE, 3.06 lakh shares were traded in the Shanthi Gears counter. The scrip had an average daily volume of 22,831 shares in the past one quarter.

The stock hit a high of Rs 80.85 and a low of Rs 71 so far during the day. The stock had a 52-week high of Rs 114.90 on 4 January 2008 and a 52-week low of Rs 48.05 on 24 March 2008.

The scrip had underperformed the market over the past one month till 7 August 2008, rising 6.65% compared to the Sensex’s 11.76% gain. It had, however, outperformed the market in the past one quarter, rising 3.61% compared to Sensex’s 12.82% fall.

The small-cap industrial gearbox maker has an equity capital of Rs 8.17 crore. Face value per share is Rs 1.

The current price of Rs 75.90 discounts its Q1 June 2008 annualised EPS of Rs 5.46, by a PE multiple of 13.90.

According to reports, Belgium-based Hansen Transmissions International NV, owned by Pune-based Suzlon Energy, is planing to buy between 50% and 100% of Shanthi Gears at around a 30% premium to the market price.

If the deal goes through, Hansen will have to make an open offer for additional 20% of Shanthi Gears in keeping with Indian laws, the reports suggested.

The net profit of Shanthi Gears rose 13.2% to Rs 11.17 crore on a 13.5% rise in sales to Rs 60.28 crore in Q1 June 2008 over Q1 June 2007.

Shanthi Gears manufactures and distributes gear boxes, gear wheels, geared motors, drafting units and conversion brackets. The company also distributes spares and complete sets of head stock gearing end conversions, coilers and related accessories and spare parts.

South China car maker to raise production capacity

FAW Haima Automobile Co. Ltd., a car maker in south China's Hainan Province, on Saturday began construction of a third factory.

The factory will double the company's annual production capacity of 150,000 cars, said Jing Zhu, chairman of the board of Haima Investment Group Shareholding Co. Ltd, parent company of FAW Haima Automobile Co. Ltd.

Covering an area of 55.3 hectares, the factory will make products including 150,000 cars and 200,000 sets of gearboxes annually upon completion in 2010.

It is estimated the fixed asset investment for the new factory alone will top 1.5 billion yuan (about 214 million US dollars), but the factory can lead to formation of an automotive industry chain featuring the creation of 30 billion yuan in industrial output value and three billion yuan in pre-tax profits, plus 5,000new jobs, according to Jing.

"This new factory will specialize in making A-class sedans," said Jing.

FAW Haima automobile, with a history of two decades and two factories with a combined production capacity of 150,000 cars, formerly cooperated with Mazda of Japan from 1990 to 2006. It now mainly produces passenger vehicles of medium grade.

The company, with headquarters in Haikou, the provincial capital of Hainan, sold 131,000 cars last year, up 62 percent from2006, and is hoping to sell 180,000 cars this year.

Businesses can still tackle summer tasks

The last few weeks of summer can be a useful time for small business owners whose companies are going through a slow period - they have a chance to tackle some of those tasks they have been putting off.
Some owners use summer downtime for big projects like writing an employee handbook, while others cross off more mundane items from their to-do lists, such as entering that pile of receipts into their accounting software.
It's probably safe to say that if you haven't done your strategic planning for the rest of 2008, that should be your priority. For example, what changes do you want to make to your products or services? How do you want to adjust your marketing program? What do you need to do to meet customer expectations that may well be changing in a more difficult business climate?
''Summer is a good time to get all this stuff done, in preparation for the fall,'' said Nancy Shenker, who owns theOnswitch, a marketing firm based in Thornwood, N.Y. ''A mistake so many business people make is they wait until Sept. 1 to really gear up. They're really short-shifting themselves.''

Anti-tobacco hysteria kills free choice

Strange times! When folks we hardly know get to rule our lives, well, they do. Every new regime eagerly enacts more laws while rarely repealing old ones. In the bargain, those with delegated authority inevitably stack on more regulations, more ordinances, more rules, and more bylaws too. And to top it off, various lobby groups push for legislation suiting their own ideological slant or self-interest. As the years roll on, and more and more rights are extinguished, more personal liberties trashed, little by little we become surrogates for the worldviews of others.

Speaking of others, they’ve surfaced in Rodrigues. Of late, anti-tobacco lobbyists are pressing for a blanket ban on all tobacco-growing on the island. Or more precisely, they want a right possessed and exercised by people throughout recorded human history, taken away from hand-to-mouth dirt farmers. Lobbyists reckon tobacco damages health, and growing it on their doorstep only encourages Rodriguans to smoke. Another contention is that contact with wet tobacco causes dermal absorption of nicotine, leading to nausea, malaise, dizziness, abdominal cramps, respiratory complications and cardiac problems. What's more, citing overseas studies, lobbyists claim that organophosphate based pesticides used in tobacco cultivation trigger depression and suicide in those exposed to them.

Let’s see. More often than not, heavy long-term smoking kills. No fancy arguments from me. It’s bad. It’s 2008. We know. What, did any of the Rodriguan clan say smoking was good for them? Hmm. Incidentally, heavy long-term consumption of junk food, salt, or grog brings on the eternal cold too. Will our crusading idéologues also picket fast-food outlets and rally to outlaw rum, phoenix beer, and salt?

Let’s zoom in on a few realities. Once harvested, tobacco is dried and cured, then sold and shipped to Mauritius. As there are no tobacco factories in Rodrigues, all cigarettes must be imported. Not exactly on our doorstep, is it? Granted, a handful of older Rodriguans still smoke chopped-up dried tobacco leaves, locally known as gro taba. But besides its choking, harsh aftertaste, gro taba is looked upon as the smoke of the underclass and, for that reason, would-be movers-and-shakers and young go-getters just don’t go near the stuff. Hardly tobacco's poster child! At any rate, living next to a brewery does not an alcoholic make.

The assertion that wet tobacco and its pesticides make growers sick, sad and suicidal draws an incredibly long bow. To make ends meet, subsistence farmers have been planting tobacco on small plots of arid land in the villages – without any drama – for generations. Typically, natural fertilizers obtained free or on the cheap are used, but occasionally chemical fertilizers are applied. It is true that tobacco and tomato pesticides contain organophosphate based compounds, which once exposed to air, soil and sunlight degrade rapidly. While it’s not sarin nerve gas, any pesticide, like battery acid or rat poison serves a specific purpose, and most sensible people instinctively know not to drink it. Organophosphate compounds are also found in insecticides, gearboxes, herbicides, paint thinners, cement mix and nail polish removers. In short, they are widely used domestically and industrially.

FAW Haima Automobile builds 3rd plant

Ltd has commenced construction of a third plant, which is expected to increase the company's annual production capacity to 300,000 cars from the existing 150,000 units, according to sources. The third plant, covering an area of 55.4 hectares, will involve in a total of RMB 1.5 billion in fixed assets. The plant is expected to be complete.

Murdered teen's parents struggle to cope

Steven Wood maneuvers his electric wheelchair in the tight kitchen and then pulls himself up to open a cupboard. He can walk, but not far, and his face is flushed and he's breathing heavy.

Steven was at the hospital, yet again, just the day before. "What do you need?" asks his wife, Susan, and she gets up to help him. Steven sits back down in the wheelchair. "I was looking for those cookies," he says. "You go and rest," says Susan, who also is in poor health and can't move well. Both are only in their 40s, but have been forced by disease to quit their jobs and scrape by on disability.

Her main illness is fibromyalgia. His are several — many stemming from a horrific car accident decades ago that severed internal organs and broke his spine. Susan had been a nurse for 16 years. Steven was in the Army for six years and then also a nurse.

"I'll get them," Susan says, and sets two boxes of store-bought cookies on the counter. The pain in their joints is too much for them to knead homemade dough anymore.

"They're good though," Steven says, getting out of his chair and settling back into his recliner in the living room with a relieved sigh. "Have one," he says.

'Not this time'

This is what they do for all visitors, especially Derek's friends. Steven and Susan are the eternal parents — feeding, supporting, listening; the kids welcome at any hour, sinking deep into the living room sofas and feeling safe. Derek was their youngest; 17, athletic, smart and gorgeous. His last name is Pieper, from Susan's first marriage. Derek was about 4 years old when Steven came into his life. He was his dad. "They say blood is thicker than water," Derek wrote on Steven's last Father's Day card, "but not this time. I love you, Daddy." Derek's car is in the garage and, down the hall, his bed is made but his sheets unwashed.

Steven and Susan know so much about their son. They can recite lines from his school papers and the notes he wrote them; they know what is posted on his MySpace page and his friend's pages. They know his favorite cologne, the awards he won and when he won them.

At the mention of his name one of their dogs — a 3-year-old hound and Great Dane mix named Buddy — lifts his large, chiseled head and perks his ears, looking for him, then lets out a soft, mournful cry and puts his head back down on a sofa by the window and curls against his blankie, a shredded and worn rug he's carried around with him since he was a puppy.

"He's still waiting for him to come home," says Steven, who, along with his wife, is more involved with Derek's life than most parents. Except Derek is dead and has been for two years.

'He was no thug'

The moon was a sliver in the early hours of July 28, 2006, and it must have been dark in those last moments. Derek and another Wesley Chapel teenager, Raymond Veluz, 18, had left a party. According to Det. Lisa Schoneman of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Raymond asked Derek if he could help him buy some marijuana and Derek agreed.

In the weeks leading up to that night, Derek had been scared by some of the young men he knew from Wesley Chapel High School. They paid Derek money to drive them around. He was alarmed that they carried guns.

"Derek made mistakes," Steven said, "But he was no thug."

Schoneman said she believes both Derek and Raymond were good kids who made some bad decisions — and who, in the end, were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Steven and Susan knew something was not right with Derek — he wasn't sleeping and he seemed frightened, but he wouldn't tell them what was wrong. They worried. That night before he died, Derek called after he got off work at Bosco's, a pizza place. He told his mom that he loved her and that he would be home soon. Then he went to that party and left in Raymond's car.

Their bodies were found at dawn the next day on a dirt road in Trilby, some 25 miles from Wesley Chapel. During the day, that area is gorgeous country, all sloping green pastures dotted with bales of hay and sewn together with old, weathered wood fences. The roads are so narrow that branches from the dense forest on each side touch overhead. There are no street lights.

Derek and Raymond had been shot multiple times from behind, their bodies found facedown.

Because of a well-founded fear of reprisal, witnesses refused to come forward. One who did, a young man named Jeremy Henry who began his criminal record at age 11, talked with detectives days after the murders and told them who he believed committed them. Three days later, he was found executed.

So for nearly two years, no arrests were made in the case. Then on July 24, witnesses decided to speak and Schoneman had enough information to get first-degree murder warrants for Tyree Jenkins, 22, and Luc Pierre-Charles, 20.

In what has been described as a miracle, Jenkins was picked up on a traffic violation in Hillsborough County less than an hour after the warrant was filed into the system. Pierre-Charles — whose yearbook photo was next to Derek's — is still at large and described as armed and dangerous. Detectives told Steven and Susan that the parents of Pierre-Charles are both Baptist ministers. A search on him shows that he was student of the month and a member of the junior honor society when he was younger.

Steven and Susan, who are both religious and say their faith is what allows them to survive, believe those who murdered their son are demon-possessed.

"When you look into their eyes, you see nothing," Susan said. They both pray for those men and their families, who, surely, are hurting

Directly outside my office, out there in the Village mall in St. John's, there are two coin-operated rides: one is a huge fibreglass apple with a giant worm in it and a steering wheel, and the other is a musical horse.

They are the sort of rides that crop up in malls and stores of all sizes in this province.

The musical rides operate purely on the guilt principle: as parents and children walk by, the hope is that kids will put up enough of a fuss that their parents will be forced to put some money in.

Parents who think ahead take their kids down the other side of the hallway, away from the enticement; parents who aren't thinking go right by the darned things and either have to plug money into them for 20 seconds or so of music and a short ride, or else have to drag a screaming, disappointed child out to the car.

The incidents of screaming far outnumber the musical rides, proving that it's harder for plenty of people to plan ahead than it might seem, and when they don't plan ahead, they have to go through a kind of public hell.

And therein lies a simple lesson for our provincial government.

Start thinking ahead, would you?

Enter the clowns.

Justice Minister Jerome Kennedy chastises lawyers at the Cameron inquiry for charging too much money for their work - apparently forgetting that he and his own law firm charged the province something close to $370,000 during the Lamer inquiry not that many years ago.

Accused of interfering with the Cameron inquiry, the same Minister Kennedy digs through piles of dusty record-boxes to find scraps of paper from the Hughes inquiry that show - no, "prove" - that the Wells government contacted that inquiry.

What Kennedy fails to disclose is that officials from the Wells government actually met with Mr. Justice Samuel Hughes and the inquiry counsel at Hughes' own request, while Kennedy's smackdown of the Cameron inquiry was completely at the government's instigation.

A small but significant difference, but one Kennedy never bothers to explain.

Premier Danny Williams - scheduled to be a witness in front of the Cameron inquiry - takes it upon himself to publicly spank first the commission counsel, and then commissioner Margaret Cameron herself, with Williams claiming the questions being asked of witnesses are too inquisitorial.

Public inquiries inquire - that's what they do. Can't stand the heat? Get out of the government.

Then-fisheries minister Tom Rideout climbs up on the back of a pickup to announce that Fishery Products International "will be charged" with shipping yellowtail flounder out of the province, and talks about the huge fines the company is facing - even though the investigation into the potential charges hasn't even been completed. Fifty charges are finally laid - and then the Department of Justice turns around and drops them all. Show trial becomes no-show trial.

The provincial government as a whole touts itself as "open, accountable and transparent," even though a host of government departments take it into their heads to deny the release of information even after the province's own Freedom of Information commissioner has already said it should be released.

And most lately, Education Minister Joan Burke takes it upon herself to interview, and then dismiss, shortlisted candidates for the job of president of Memorial University, despite the fact she had no legislative authority to do so. Forget the rules, we'll pick the candidate we want.

Facts, of course, aren't always in the Burke lexicon. This is, after all, the same minister who suggested that an unpalatable consultant's report be shredded without ever being considered by the school board that had purchased it.

And Burke may just be channelling her boss - Williams didn't have a legislative leg to stand on back when he was trying to stuff Andy Wells into the job of head of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labra-dor Offshore Petroleum Board, but that didn't stop Williams from trying, at considerable taxpayers' expense.

Stymied at the CNLOPB, Wells miraculously became the best choice for head of the PUB - oh, wait. He was the only choice considered. Unlike at MUN, the Public Utilities Board job didn't bother with the niceties of anything like a messy old search for the best candidates.

And on, and on. Premier Williams and Health Minister Ross Wiseman give one set of doctors special cash top-ups - and then wonder why other doctors, also at the bottom of Canadian medical pay-rates, might be upset.

To sum up, this would be a more-than-reasonable government, if its members didn't keep turning around and acting like self-centred, egotistical dopes.

Generally, governments don't interfere with legally constituted inquiries, or pronounce that companies will be charged with offences before the investigations into those offences are even completed, or interfere with hirings where provincial legislation doesn't actually give them that role.

Ashok Leyland to unveil new range of trucks in 2010

Hinduja Group's heavy vehicle major Ashok Leyland today said it was working on developing an all-new full range truck platform, which would be introduced by 2010.

The company is also working on a new engine series, 'Neptune', which will replace its old version by 2013-14 in all it's new vehicles. The trucks would be in the range of 16 tonnes to 49 tonnes.

"The new truck platform 'Unitruck', reflects the universal scope and versatility to address the needs of domestic and global markets," Ashok Leyland Managing Director R Seshasayee told reporters here today.

The platform can create variants to meet different geographies, road and load conditions, different applications and legislative requirement.

Neptune, the six cylinder inline engine with capacity ranging from 4.7 litre to 8 litre, is Bharat Stage (BS) III and BS IV complaint, he said.

Seshasayee said that by 2013-14, they would be phasing out the older version and the new engine Neptune platform would be Incorporated in all the vehicles.

The drive train would feature a range of gear boxes with cost effective manual as well as automatic transmissions, he added.

Coupled with rear axles of a wide range of ratios, they can be optimised for performance and fuel efficiency to suit different duty cycles.

Shoppers And Stores Gear Up For Tax Holiday

Tennessee and Virginia consumers will get a break on back-to-school purchases Aug. 1-3 when taxes on some clothing, supplies and other goods are dropped from sales receipts.

Cash-strapped teachers also will get a break during the tax holiday as many have to pay for basic supplies out of their own pockets because of shrinking school system budgets.

But all consumers – whether they are parents, teachers, accountants or truck drivers – are welcome to take advantage of the tax breaks, as long as they buy qualified items.

The annual tax holiday in both states begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and ends on Sunday, Aug. 3 at 11:59 p.m. Lee and Teresa Thomas, of Bristol, Tenn., were running errands on Thursday when they were asked about the upcoming tax holiday. They have three children, two are in preschool and one is in fourth grade.

“We’ve been taking advantage of the tax holiday since 2006, and the savings is worth it,” Lee Thomas said. “Anytime you can save money it’s worth it.”

The couple said they generally buy in bulk during the tax-exempt weekend for two reasons. First, buying more notebooks, pencils or crayons at one time means they don’t have to return to stores for a while. Second, their main purchases are clothing, which means with children close in age, a coat or a pair of shoes can sometimes be handed down while the item is still in relatively good shape.

Over the weekend, all consumers in Tennessee can purchase items totaling $100 or less tax-free, such as clothing, including jeans, jackets, dresses, socks and shoes.

School and art supplies, including paper, pens, crayons, lunch boxes and notebooks, also can be purchased tax-free if the total amount is $100 or less.

Computers with a price tag of less than $1,500 also can be purchased without paying sales taxes. However, accessories purchased separately, such as speakers and monitors as well as software, are not tax-exempt.

“We don’t sell computers, but we do sell a lot of binders, paper and pencils,” said Bill Wilmoth, manager of Big Lots off Volunteer Parkway in Bristol, Tenn. “Sales definitely jump during that weekend, but our school supply sales have been up all through July.”

The start of a new school year also draws teachers to the store, Wilmoth added.

“I have so many teachers in here – the school board is short on funds and teachers come in and buy loads of pencils, notebooks, the essentials,” he said.

Items sold via mail, telephone, e-mail or the Internet also may qualify if the order is paid for and processed during the exemption period.

Tennesseans will get a tax break of 9.25 percent, which is the combination of the 7 percent state tax and 2.25 percent local sales tax.

So the savings on $100 worth of tax-exempt items is $9.25, and the savings on a $50 purchase is $4.63.

The tax exemption is based solely on the purchase of items that qualify for the holiday, and no identification or certificate is required.

There’s also no limit on the number of items that may be purchased as long as the purchase price of each of those items is below the threshold provided in the law.

Tennessee residents are expected to save about $10 million during the three-day period this year, compared to $14 million in 2007 and $15 million in 2006, according to the Tennessee Legislative Budget Analysis Office.

Factors causing the savings amounts to decline over the years include the U.S. economic downturn and the fact that many shoppers may have purchased more items last year or the year before than they planned to use at that time, according to the state office.

During the same three-day period in Virginia, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear are exempt from Virginia sales tax.

Under Virginia law, the tax on purchases of all items other than food is 5 percent.

Each eligible school-supply item must be priced at $20 or less, and each eligible article of clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less.

The actual savings are less in Virginia because the tax is lower. A $20 purchase saves consumers $1; a $100 buy saves $5.

“The price of school supplies is outrageous,” said Darren Berkley of Bristol, Va., who was shopping at Office Depot off Interstate 81’s Exit 7. “I have a son, Josh, who’s entering his junior year at the University of Tennessee, so back-to-school applies to older students, too, and we [he and his wife] are paying for it.”

Berkley’s son goes through plenty of art supplies, including sketch pads, so when tax holidays come around the purchases are usually made in bulk.

“Anything you can save is huge, because it seems like we’re continually buying something,” he said.

In Virginia, articles of clothing include any apparel or footwear intended to be worn on the human body. Tax-exempt clothing does not, however, include accessories, sporting equipment or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity.

Tax-free school supplies do not have to be used in school or school activities, but the items are limited to goods commonly used by a student, including art supplies, instructional materials and school music supplies.

One of the major differences in the tax holidays for the two states is that Virginia does not exempt computer systems from taxes.

In January, a bill was introduced to the Virginia General Assembly that would have added computers costing up to $1,500 to the list of tax-exempt items this year. The House vote on Feb. 7 was 99-0 for the addition. But the bill has been sitting in the Senate Finance Committee since late February.

Virginia residents are projected to save about $4 million this year, according to Virginia Department of Taxation officials. Figures for past years were not available.

Tracey Yates, a former fourth-grade teacher in Washington County, Va., was loading groceries into her vehicle on Thursday at the Wal-Mart, also off Exit 7.

“I actually drove all the way to Gatlinburg last year because they have outlet stores there, so prices are already reduced,” she said of last year’s tax-exempt period. “I bought supplies for my classroom, and I’ve always had to buy chalk, pencils and crayons. So, as for school supplies – yes, the tax holiday is awesome.”

In both states, out-of-state residents can take advantage of the tax savings. However, when property purchased without the payment of sales taxes in Virginia is exported for use in other states, a use tax may be applied.

Items purchased at Virginia businesses via the Internet that qualify will be exempt from taxes if the item is delivered to and paid for by the customer.

Politics and political campaigns are featured in every newspaper, website and blog, and collectors are looking at the new memorabilia that can be part of a collection.

The official pins sold or given away by the party, not the souvenir pins sold by merchants, are the ones that gain in collector value. The signs, T-shirts, pencils, jewelry, mugs, hats, dishes, paperweights and other memorabilia should also be official.

Save the interesting political items you see. Usually the material from primaries is of little interest later, but this year the first black and first woman candidates created a "crossover" appeal for collectors.

"Dont worry, Im the gear box doctor," answers a red eyed strange figure, clad in tattered dusty overall splashed with grease and oil.

He is Mr Thabang Mosholombi aged 30 years who calls himself the doctor of vehicles gear boxes and diffs as he specialises in repairing them in Molepolole.

Mr Mosholombi was born and raised in Mathathane village in Bobirwa area in the Central District. He operates his business along Gaborone/Molepolole road opposite High Way Fresh Produce and LEA offices at Ga-Monametsana ward in Molepolole.

Entering the place, one is greeted by a big board with bold red letters, that read "Welcome to Mr Gear Box and Diff Hospital".

Thabang started his business from scratch while still residing in Selebi-Phikwe township in 2001. He learnt to repair gear boxes from a Japanese company where he was employed as a labourer.

He had never gone to any college to learn the art of repairing gear boxes. He just developed interest and absorbed the knowledge from the company and worked even harder until he reached the level of a mechanic.

He says he tried to get financial assistance from CEDA and LEA but due to little knowledge of the procedures he could not manage so he started business on his own from the money he got from his customers.

He bought his tools from the savings he made out of charging motorists who brought their gear boxes and diff for repair. He says during a good day he can make up to P1 000 and he handles different vehicles including trucks. He has employed two labourers.

"The only problem I have experienced is that some of my clients take too long to buy parts for repair of their vehicles," says Thabang.

People as far as Letlhakeng sub district and the surrounding villages visit him every day for repair, something he is proving excellent at doing.

Mr Oreeditse Lefatshe, one of the customers, indicates that he brought his two vehicles to Thabang and every thing went well because he never encountered any problems after he handled them.

Avoid Aggressive Driving

Research has shown that fuel economy decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Although each vehicle will have its own optimal fuel economical speed or range of speeds, its gas mileage usually comes down when the speed reaches above 60 mph.

Remove Excess Weight

It stands to reason that heavier vehicles will consume more petrol or gas. While the vehicle structure and body may be heavy, do not make it heavier by storing unnecessary items, especially heavy ones. The extra weight will affect smaller vehicles than larger ones.

Avoid Excessive Idling Time

Lubrication For Your Table Saw's Blade Wheel Gears

One of woodworking's biggest bummers has to be a table saw with blade wheel and tilt gears that are so caked with sawdust that they become difficult to turn. Especially if you're a hobbyist who has been waiting all week to get into the wood shop to work on a project.

The problem that most woodworkers have stems from the use of "wet" or sticky grease that most table saw manufacturers use in the factory. They slather this grease on thick and it works beautifully for a time - until your blade wheel only turns with a hammer.

Some woodworkers claim that grease of this manner is never a problem, that they get years of great turning out of their blade and tilt gears lubricated just as they come from the factory. For these folks the chances are good that they are both light woodworkers - that is, they don't log many hours in the wood shop - and that they use dust collection. Which every woodworker should be doing by the way for safety purposes.

For the hobbyist with dust collection though it's still advisable to keep a close watch on those blade and tilt gears to make sure they're not gumming up too bad.

If you're having a problem with turning your gears - or want to preemptively maintain your gears with a non-sticky lubricant - you'll need to first clean off the grease and sawdust.

Read your manual first before attempting any sort of maintenance - that should always be your first guide to keeping your gears cleaned and rotating smoothly.

In addition to, or possibly following what your manual recommends you could clean off the gunk first with a rag, and then use an old toothbrush to clean off the remaining gunk and grease.

Finally - if you have it - use compressed air to really clean the gears of any remaining sawdust.

Then you've got to spend some time deciding which lubricant you're going to use.

There are a number of non-greasy, non-sticky lubricant options that tend not to attract saw dust.

Perhaps one of the most popular is simple bees wax - the kind often used for sealing toilets. Use that tooth brush and brush on a good healthy coat of wax. Paraffin wax - the kind often available at grocery stores for use in canning - is another alternative to bees wax.

Lithium grease is another popular option for lubricating your table saw gears. Lithium grease comes in two varieties - spray on and lubricant in a tube.

The spray on variety dries to a light coat and typically penetrates well and even cleans the gears a little. One issue you may find with the spray on lithium lubricant is that it doesn't leave a thick coat. This may be fine for certain applications but may not give you the ultimate in smooth turning.

The lithium grease that comes in a tube is dense like grease. Apply it liberally in a good thick coat to achieve the levels of smoothness and motion that you're used to in brand new machines.

Another popular lubricant found at most bike stores is spray-on graphite lube. It dries to a nice powder that doesn't collect dust, though doesn't give you the density of application that lithium grease does.

One expensive and highly-lubricating alternative is AntiSeize cpd, found in auto supply stores and used on spark plugs. This metal-added lubricant sticks in a manner similar to paint and works extremely well at high temperatures. It's more expensive but like the other lubricants mentioned does not attract dust.

Other Lubrication Points for Your Table Saw The bed of your table saw needs regular maintenance too. Scrub it off regularly and spray it with a teflon based dry lubricant to keep the wood from binding.

Consider lubricating your saw blades as well with a Blade Lubricant Stick. The oils and waxes in the stick make your blade cut more cleanly through your projects and helps extend the life of your blade.

Bearing lubricant is another important lube to investigate for your table saw - a good, penetrating lubricant that will protect and seal the bearing's inner workings and extend the overall life of your saw.

Now, for those of you who don’t know the difference, let me give you a quick summary:
- Automatic transmission means the car has only two pedals (acceleration and break), and the gear is shifted automatically, based on the speed it’s traveling at. This is the kind normally found in cars in America and Mexico.
- Manual transmission implies a third pedal, called a clutch, being present in the car. With this system, the driver manually changes gears, the system being more commonly used around the world than its automatic counterpart.

As with any two approaches to the same system, both have pros and both have cons, so I will try to point them out as clearly as possible and try not to shed any bad light on either one of these marvelous inventions. After all, none of them is flawed, they’re just made for different kinds of situations.

First of all, let’s take a look at automatic transmission. This is lovely for beginners to learn driving on, because you don’t need to change gears yourself, except between Reverse, Neutral and Forward, thus allowing you to focus on the road better than you would with a manual gearbox. Also, there’s no way you can skip a gear, which can sometimes happen with manuals, especially if you’re a beginner, so automatics help extend the engine’s lifespan. Another plus would be fuel efficiency, because there is no chance for the car to reach too high of a speed in too low of a gear.

On the other hand, though, being able to shift your gears manually gives you the ability to get a better acceleration in key situations, by simply switching gears downward before you accelerate. Also, switching to a lower gear creates a phenomenon called an “engine brake”, which is very useful during the winter and during rainfall because it keeps the car from skidding, while still slowing it down. Neither of these is possible with automatics, hence the large number of traffic accidents that could’ve been avoided if the gearbox was manual. Still, a manual gearbox is a bit harder to use than an automatic, because you always have to know which gear you’re in, where the one you want to shift to is located, and most importantly, make sure you’ve got an appropriate speed for the gear you’re in.

Early Stages of a Texas Holdem Tourney

Simply, bluffing at the starting stages wouldn’t be a smart move because people’s stacks tend to be smaller in relation to the size of the pot. Since the amount of chips you win from a bluff is worth less than the amount you stand to lose, bluffing loses a lot of value. So instead, play your cards. Play your opponents. Do not try to force action simply because you think you need to have a certain number of chips to have a chance of winning. You should be thinking about accumulating more chips, while trying to conserve the chips you already have.

The early stages of a tournament is the best time to show off your poker image. Since most of the players may not know you or your style of play (unless you are a celebrity), how you’re perceived is crucial. I would suggest only moving in with strong hands (AK, AQ, KJ, etc) and aggressively bet and raise when necessary. When opponents recognize that you are only playing strong starting hands, they often fear your raises and only call if they have a strong hand (Unless they’re a Maniac).

Once you are recognized as a tight player, it would be good to shift gears once in a while to steal some pots. I like involving myself in pots with players who I think are weak or seem to be afraid, and I avoid pots with overly aggressive and maniac players (unless I’m holding the nuts). You can assume those weak-afraid players are betting with strong hands. So simply getting involved with a weak player in late position may be most profitable. No matter what the flop comes down as, unless there are many scare card possibilities, I’m betting or reraising the pot. It is better to bet or raise rather than just call.

Middle Stages of the Tourney

Towards the middle of the tournament, you need to switch gears. Since the blinds get bigger, stealing the blinds will help you stay alive. It takes a much weaker hand than usual to raise to steal the blind, but a stronger hand than usual to call a raise. Again, most of the time you will be looking just to survive and increase your stack bit by bit in the middle rounds. You want to avoid confrontation without the nuts and just take down some small pots without controversy.

However, if you are a large chip stack (or even just a medium one), you may want to take advantage of this survival mode. Take control of the game by raising and frequently putting other people at a decision for all of their chips. After all, if they go all-in, they're risking it all but you aren't because you can lose the pot and still keep on fighting. However, don't do this too much. Steal some pots, but don't be so obvious that people will call you all-in with top or even second pair. Also, don't do this against very bad players. They will call everything.

End Stages

Towards the end of the tournament is when the coin-flip decisions become very important. Frequently, the blinds are so high it makes sense for a player with a low or moderate stack to go all-in preflop. Generally, when you go all-in you want to have Ace and good kicker or a pocket pair. If you have Ace and good kicker you are an advantage against all unpaired hands and may even have someone dominated. If you have a pocket pair, you are a small advantage against all unpaired hands and at a huge advantage or disadvantage against other pocket pairs (depending on who has the bigger one).

Generally, if you have one of these marginal hands, it's best to just shove all of your chips in preflop. When you are a low stack, you cannot afford to be blinded away anymore. Once the flop comes, chances are it's not going to be perfect. By shoving in all of your chips preflop, you have the added chance of stealing the blinds and can avoid being bluffed out.

The Rise of 4 Stroke Motorcycles

In 1966, Suzuki introduced the 250cc Super Six - a mechanical wonder, sporting a twin cylinder two stroke engine, made from alloy and exquisitely built. The Super Six was billed as a 100mph machine - an incredible claim for a 250cc machine; in reality, 90 was barely attainable. But the machine was a delight, with handling, superb electrics and light weight all contributing to the pleasurable experience of riding a fine motorcycle.

Many more graceful machines followed, and it was a time of excitement as engineering marvels graced the roads; 200cc two stroke twins, 500cc twins, even a 750cc water cooled stroker. These machines were adapted for road racing by various factories and won considerable favour with riders. Two strokes ruled.

Those days are gone. The environment is fragile and governments restricted machines to an extent that they disappeared forever. Like everything else, common sense prevailed and progress killed off the exciting era

But the technology that went into those exciting machines, still survives: electronic ignition, disc brakes, solid wheels, tubeless tyres - to name but a few. The machines are dead, but the legacy lives on. The future is bright. The future is here.

Frame

A basic frame will be hollow aluminum or steel parts welded together. Perfectly round metal is equally strong on all sides, however, higher end bikes will be more oval, taller than they are wide. This is because most of the stress on a bike is up and down, not side to side. As you go up in price, the frame could be made of a combination of aluminum and carbon fiber, a lighter and stronger material that allows the manufacturer to build a frame in any shape.

Brakes

Most bicycles use cantilever or "v" brakes. Levers on the handlebars pull a cable. The cable is connected to a set of clamps with brake pads. The clamps tug to the rim of the bike wheel, stopping the bike. To perform best, the cables have to be well aligned and the rims have to be straight and free of dirt or water, which is often impossible in muddy terrains. Gears and derailleurs

Gears are used so the rider can move at a constant pace no matter what the terrain or slope. A bike with one gear is said to have a gear ratio of 1:1 (each time you pedal one revolution, the back wheel will rotate one revolution as well.) Usually you would wish to go faster than that, so gears are used to increase the speed of the back tire when you pedal. A comfortable gear ratio on a level highway is about 6.5:1. However, when you're going uphill, making the back wheel go that fast is impossible, so you would gear down towards a ratio of 1:1. Shift gears before you need to, as you need the chain moving smoothly to shift.

A derailleur is a device to switch the gears, controlled by shifters attached to the handlebars. A cable moves a spring, which forces the chain onto another sprocket (the cogs on the back wheel and between your pedals).

Suspension

The suspension gives the biker comfort, absorbing bumps and potholes similar to that of a vehicle. Styles range from no suspension (hardtail), to full suspension (front and rear). While suspension systems add weight to the bike, the trade off is better comfort and enjoyment. Many inexpensive, entry-level mountain bikes now come with full suspension, though hardtails are definitely less expensive. Higher-end suspension systems will deliver more shock absorbency and durability with less weight.

The drive train serves two functions: it transmits power from the engine to the drive wheels, and it varies the amount of torque. "Power" is the rate or speed at which work is performed. "Torque" is turning or twisting force. Multiple ratio gearboxes are necessary because the engine delivers its maximum power at certain speeds, or RPM (Rotations Per Minute). In order to use the same engine RPM's at different road speeds, it is necessary to change the "Gear Ratio" between the engine and the drive wheels. Just like a bicycle, the car has to switch gears in order to move at a wide range of speeds. Unlike your bicycle, the car's drivetrain also has to allow you to back up. The transmission allows the gear ratio to be adjusted, and the differential lets the drive wheels turn at different speeds. Manual transmissions usually have four or five speeds, and often have "overdrive", which means that the output shaft can turn faster than the input shaft for fuel economy on the highway. Mountain bike gears are continually becoming more and more complicated and intricate. Today’s bikes can come with up to 27 gear ratios. It is common for a mountain bike today to use nine gears in the back and three sprockets of different sizes in the front for gear ration production.

Why so many gears? The most common reason is that a large number of gears allow a rider to pedal at the same pace no matter what terrain that he/she is on. This can be understood better if you think about a bike that just has one gear. Every time you turn the pedals one full turn, then the rear wheel also turns one full turn, too (1:1 gear ratio).

For example, your back wheel is measured at 26 inches. If you pedal one full turn, then this would mean that your wheel moved 81.6 inches. If you are riding at 50 RPM, then you will be able to go 340 feet per minute. This means that you were going 3.8MPH, which is equivalent to walking speed. This speed is great for going up a hill that is steep, but it is not a good speed for flat ground or racing downhill.

If you want your bike to go quicker, then you will need a different ratio. If you want to reach a speed of 25 MPH downhill using a 50-RPM cadence, then you will need to have a 5.6:1 gear ration. If you have lots of gears on your bike, then you will be able to get that ratio so that you can continue your pedaling at a consistent pace, no matter what terrain you are on or what your speed is.

A typical mountain bike that has 27 gears will have six gears so incrementally close to the other that you will not be able to determine that there is any difference between the gears when you change them.

Most mountain bike riders decide to choose a gear system with a front socket that is suitable for the slope or terrain that they usually ride on and they stay with this choice, even though it may be more difficult under a heavy load to shift the gears. This is purely a personal decision, but it is simpler to shift between gears when the rear socket, rather than the front one.

Last of all, check the paperwork. Make sure the registration document is in the sellers name. They may be a trader trying to pose as a private seller. Check the MOT to make sure its current. Check the service history to make sure it matches the vehicle being sold. Also you may want to check the engine and chassis number to see if it matches what is on the registration document. You will find that information on a small metal plate located under the bonnet. If the plate is missing be suspicious.

It's also a good idea to get the car HPI checked. This will tell you if the car has been stolen, been in an and accident, or is on finance. It costs around £40 but well worth it.

I recently took delivery of my new car, a Honda Civic Hybrid, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it drove like a 2ltr car but in reality only had a 1300 cc engine.

For the uninitiated a hybrid car has a small engine and an electric motor in series. The gearbox is a CVT (continuously variable transmission) so no automatic gear changes are perceptible. In normal motoring the car uses the small engine; when you need more power, the electric motor assists the engine and conversely when less power is needed the car charges the batteries, equally when braking the energy is directed to the batteries as well.

The one feature which was initially unsettling was that the engine stops when at a standstill with the foot brake applied. Releasing the foot brake starts the engine again.

The dashboard has an additional dial which indicates the state of charge of the batteries and an indication of assist (using the stored power from the batteries) or charge (putting power back into the batteries.

What are you going to use the tractor for?, is of course, the most important question to answer. Is it just for mowing or will you be using a loader or backhoe on it? Will you be working on rocky or uneven ground?

Dollars & Sense

You should definitely shop around, however, don't forget that if you are comparing the prices of different makes and models of tractor it can sometimes be much like comparing apples to oranges. As with anything else, some makes and models are made better than others. A few more dollars upfront in price for a better quality of tractor makes more 'sense' than having to pay the cost of constant repairs and maintenance.

Different Makes and Models of Tractors

If at all possible, one of the best things you can do to make your life easier, is to purchase a tractor that is easy to get parts for. There are many foreign makes and models that are exact matches to domestic tractors. With that in mind, you can get a parts book for U.S. made tractor and purchase the corresponding part numbers that way. Some parts dealers don't like to sell parts for a gray market tractor. In fact, dealers of some brands of tractors are being told by a higher authority that they cannot willingly sell parts for gray market tractors.

Diesel Engines

Make sure you get a tractor with a diesel engine. Diesel engines have better performance and usually last longer than gas engines. Implements also work better on diesel engine tractors.

Horsepower

Approximately how many horsepower will you need? One horsepower (hp) is the amount of energy required to lift 550 pounds, one foot, in one second. In a tractor the energy is produced from torque and engine speed. A 100 hp tractor is one with a maximum of 100 horsepower available at the power-takeoff (PTO) outlet. PTO

Nearly all Japanese tractor manufacturers include the power take off (PTO) horsepower (hp) in their model numbers; however, they do not include the engine (fly) hp. The first two numbers of the model number is where you find the PTO hp. The PTO hp is important because it is telling you the equipment working power of the tractor. It tells you what horsepower that equipment requiring a PTO will get from the tractor. Click here for a more in depth explanation of PTO.

Cylinders

Consider getting a three or four cylinder tractor. Three and four cylinder tractors are generally newer tractors and run quieter and smoother than the two cylinder models. Transmissions

There are several different types of transmissions for tractors. If you are not knowledgeable about tractor transmissions, it would be a good idea if you familiarize yourself with the different types listed below, so that when you go out to shop for a tractor you will well informed. Manual transmissions on tractors were made to be shifted while the tractor is not in motion. This will cause a grinding noise due to the fact the two gears that are trying to mesh are rotating at different speeds. Manual shift transmissions are known for their durability, however, they are not considered to be very user friendly. The sliding gear and the collar shift are two of the more common transmissions.

Synchro Shift transmissions are basically collar shift transmissions (a type of manual transmission, see above). The difference is the added synchronizers, which makes it so that the gears don't grind if you are trying to shift while the tractor is in motion. Some synchro shift transmissions only have one pair of synchronized gears, while others have all speeds synchronized, including forward and reverse. The synchronization of forward and reverse is called the shuttle shift. This synchro shift is a dependable transmission, however, just like with automobiles, the more 'tricky' the tranny is, and the more chance there is of something going wrong or breaking.

A Power Shift transmission is an option well worth considering. Not those standard shift transmissions won't work just fine; however, often power shift is a nice little luxury, depending on what you are going to be using the tractor for. With a power shift transmission you can choose different speeds while the tractor is in motion, without needing to use the clutch pedal.

Hydrostatic transmissions operate in a closed loop, the flow of the pump is reversed, which in turn causes the tractor to reverse directions. The hydrostatic transmission is considered to be very dependable and is able to defend itself against 'operator difficulty'. Because this is transmission is controlled by a foot pedal, when you take your foot off of the pedal the tractor will stop, this is a nice safety feature. Hydrostatic is considered the best selection for such things as large mowing jobs because it allows for easy direction change and continual, unchanging speed.

Implement Adaptability

You will want a tractor with a Category 1, 3-point hitch and standard rotation PTO shafts. Most imported compact tractors are equipped with these items; however, there are a few that are not.

Implement Availability
Before you purchase a a tractor, make sure that good quality implements are available for it. It is a good idea to try to find a tractor with as many model-specific attachments as possible. These include things such as loaders and backhoes, which have custom-fitted mounts that are not interchangeable with other makes and models of tractor. You can often save money if you purchase the implements at the same time you purchase the tractor and some implements can be very expensive to add on at a later time.

Parts Manuals

Sometime parts manuals can be very hard to acquire. Make sure there is one available for the tractor you choose. Ask how much the manual is, sometimes the cost can be over $100.00 dollars.

Warranty
Find out what kind of a warranty comes with the tractor. Find out what it covers and for how long. Below is a checklist that you can print and take with you when you are out shopping for a tractor. Just check things off and take notes as you check over the prospective tractor.
Yes, it's a very long checklist, but well worth your time if you want to get a good quality tractor at a fair price.

Some things on the checklist may not pertain to the type of tractor you are looking for; however, we believe that most folks will find the majority of information here to be very helpful.

New utility vehicle from Kubota - utility equipment

Kubota Tractor Corp., Torrance, Calif., has announced the development of its first utility vehicle, the RTV900. Designed for general purpose, worksite, turf and recreational applications, the new unity vehicle is available in four configurations and incorporates the same technology used on the company's tractors, which have been sold in the U.S. for more than 30 years.

Kubota entered the utility vehicle market based on the growing trends of utility vehicles and the resources it already had to produce the vehicles, said James Burnside, product manager at Kubota. "We are going to grow this business. This is going to be big growth for Kubota this year."
After three years in development, Kubota began production on the vehicles in Gainesville, Ga. Full production was slated to begin in January.

While the company may have aimed for commonality between its new utility vehicle and its tractors in many areas, Burnside said the Kubota D902 diesel engine was designed specifically for the RTV900 utility vehicle. The three-cylinder, OHV, liquid-cooled engine has an 898 cc displacement on a bore and stroke of 2.83 in. x 2.90 in. and is rated 21.6 hp. The engine features a half float valve cover with a rubber ring gasket to seal and isolate vibration and reduce noise throughout the crankcase, the company said. Engine cooling is provided by a Denso radiator.

The launch of a new hydraulic pump drive for steep incline applications highlights an expanded marketing program for Funk Mfg. Funk, Coffeyville, Kan., manufactures a variety of powertrain components, including transmissions, gearboxes and hydraulic pump drives, and is responsible for the marketing of axles manufactured by the Power Systems Group of Deere & Co., Funk's parent company. Funk also signed a North American sales agreement with England's International Transmissions Ltd. (see August 1998, Diesel Progress).

The new pump drive for steep incline use is part of Funk's 56000 series, and is similar in design to the existing five pump drives in that range. The new drive carries a rating to 950 hp (2000 lb.ft. at 2500 rpm) and can drive up to five hydraulic pumps. Target markets include trenchers, drill rigs and trash compactors.

The new steep incline configuration includes pressure lubrication, as well as a lowered sump case that is designed to eliminate gear contact with the oil in a horizontal position and reduces contact with the oil in side tilt applications up to 30 [degrees].

Continuous operation in extreme side tilt applications in normal gearbox configurations can immerse one or more gears totally in oil, causing heating and gear damage because of the churning of the oil, Funk said. The new pump drive design includes a lube pump that supplies oil to all gear meshes, splines and bearings at all times, through internal lines drilled into the pump drive casting. Thus there are no external lines to leak or break, Funk said.

A pressure switch is also part of the new configuration, and can be wired to a panel light to warn the operator of low lube oil pressure in the drive. Further, the new hydraulic pump drive also includes high-contact ratio spur gears for quieter operation and ease of service and cylindrical roller bearings are also used, eliminating the need to shim the beatings.

The new pump drive configuration is also the first of what is expected to be an expanded emphasis on pump drives for Funk. According to Jim Huffman, sales manager, part of that program is increased emphasis on distributor pump drive sales and packaging. This is being done, said Huffman, as Funk distributors are doing more and more work with smaller equipment manufacturers.

The Funk distributors, totaling 22 worldwide, keep unsealed pump drives in stock, as well as gear ratio sets, power take-offs, a range of inputs, clutches, pump adapters and plates that allow them to essentially "build" a pump drive for a specific customer application. There are also 27 service dealers worldwide that support Funk's OEM direct programs.

Some distributors are packaging the Funk pump drives with Deere engines as a complete hydraulic power unit, while others are packaging hydraulic pumps with the pump drives, giving the equipment manufacturer a full hydraulic drive package.

As detailed in August, Funk is now the exclusive sales agent of International Transmissions Ltd., for the Americas. This adds a complementary range of transmissions and axles to Funk's axle and transmission range.

Two years ago I celebrated the centenary of Rolls-Royce by driving a Silver Ghost, the first of the marque to go into series- production. The example exhibited at the Motor Show in November 1906 was dubbed the 40/50' by then 12 cars had been tested to destruction and the 13th, painted and plated in silver, seemed so magnificent that mere numbers would no longer do and it became the Silver Ghost.

Motoring correspondents of its day wrote of riding in the Ghost as being wafted through the air, as though the wheels were not in contact with the ground, in total silence, at speeds quite unimaginable. Autocar magazine in 1907 was responsible for the myth that "one's auditory nerves" heard nothing louder than the dashboard clock.

Were they blind, deaf and comprehensively insensate? To drive an early Ghost now - cosseted, adored and venerated for a century - is to be deafened by the racket, and to have one's teeth so loosened by the juddering, that the sane man must prefer to travel in a horse- drawn cart.

During the many years of its manufacture, the suspension of the Ghost was revised, refined and improved, yet it obstinately remained a creature familiar to any charioteer of Julius Caesar's day' and even when the Ghost was replaced by the Phantom I in 1925, the old chassis soldiered on for four more years, carrying the new engine.

The engine may well have been the smoothest, quietest and most flexible of its day, and there can be no doubting its reliability, but in truth it looks and sounds like a barrel-organ built for the Black Dyke Mills Band. It is a big six of 7,036cc, producing 50bhp at 1,500rpm - hardly enough for sparkling performance when bodies by the great coachbuilders of the day brought the on-the-road weight to the best part of three tonnes. That weight was an essential part of keeping the wheels in contact with the road and smoothing out the bounce.

In 1909 the capacity was increased to 7,428cc and by 1911 power had risen to 58bhp. Right at the end of its lifespan, in 1925, it had been persuaded to give 85bhp. By then it had been mated to a variety of three-and four-speed gearboxes with ratios that always made it possible to drive in top gear and no other - a signal advantage to drivers who could not master the business of double- declutching for a silent change.

The British public, restrained by an early speed-limit of 20mph, were less interested in speed than in a car's ability to do everything required of it in top gear. Double declutching to match the rotating speeds of the gears was virtually impossible for most private owners who, if confronted by a hill, were inclined to stop, select the gear in which the car might climb it and stay in it rather than risk the crash of gear-grinding on the move.

Rolls-Royce offered reassurance with a very early Ghost driven from Bexhill to Glasgow in top, and in 1911 this feat was capped by a car driven from London to Edinburgh and back, followed by a speed trial at Brook lands in which the car, nicknamed The Sluggard, roared round the circuit at 78.26mph.

A 15,000-mile road trial to and forth between London and Glasgow without a forced stop further substantiated the car's claim to be reliable. Then a single-seater Ghost circled Brook-lands at 101mph. When in India a Ghost, deprived of tools and with its bonnet locked so that its oil and water could not be topped up, climbed six mountain passes in a row, the car became the favoured marque of nawabs and maharajahs.

The first advertisement for the Ghost then asked the question: "Is this the best car in the world?'" The second unhesitatingly stated that it was. We have believed it ever since.

Was it ever true? Response in Britain to the Ghost was so ecstatic that R-R dropped all other models to concentrate on it and production rose to seven cars a week. I am content to believe that it was, in its first incarnation, the best-made car in the world, the most scrupulously considered in every tiny detail, that the tolerances were such that nothing could ever bend, distort or sheer.

But if the legend meant that the Ghost's engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension were so far in advance of the engineering of the day that they required nothing but a little tinkering to keep R-R ahead of all its rivals, then it was a downright lie.

Royce was a perfectionist rather than an innovator, content to make better what had already been made before. It was Rolls, killed in a flying accident in 1910, who determined that their cars should be big and powerful, that their bodies should all be built by the great coach-builders - exclusive, inventive and expensive independent craftsmen - and it was Rolls who drove the marque into the headlines and high society.

The T-30 Horizontal Machining Center will be used to machine housings and component gears up to 40 in. by 40 in. With the acquisition of the T-30, Cincinnati Gear manufactures more parts in less time, thus increasing production, the company said. As a palletized machine, the T-30 can work on one piece while the operator sets up a second, third or fourth. Additionally, the T-30 is equipped with inspection capabilities to ensure quality products to the customer. The T-30 is a fully automatic machine, including tool selection and positioning, cutting feeds selection, spindle speeds and coolant control. The T-30's 90 tool positioner for milling, drilling, tapping, boring and reaming can be changed automatically during just one handling or the work piece, saving additional time and energy

Mugen Prime 12 RTR

The ready-to-run RC kits available today are the best ever; in addition to generally excellent factory assembly, many RTRs now include painted and trimmed bodies, fuel bottles, batteries and other accessories that make it easier than ever to go directly from the hobby shop to the track with barely a pit stop to plug in the antenna tube. That's convenient, but every step the factory does for you increases the cost of the kit and homogenizes the car just a little more. There are hobbyists out there who might be looking for an RTR that's not quite as finished so they can say, I built it," not just, I bought it," and even save a few bucks in the process.

Mugen's* new Prime 12 RTR is just such a kit. The chassis is ready to roll, with installed radio gear and glued-on tires, but its Andy's body (your choice of an Accord or a Stratus) isn't painted, so you can give your Prime 12 a unique look, and there are fewer frills to increase the kit's cost.
